Biography / Biographie / سيرة

Prior to law school, Sofwat served full-time in the Canadian Armed Forces (“CAF”) and developed strong moral, leadership, and organizational skills. This unique experience also taught him how to work effectively under pressure and overcome any obstacles that he encounters in life. As an immigrant to Canada from a visible minority group, he recognizes that this incredible country has given him many opportunities, and he is proud of the opportunity that he had to serve in the military. Following his military service, Sofwat studied and lived in the Waterloo region - Canada’s Silicon Valley. While completing his Master of Business Entrepreneurship and Technology from the University of Waterloo, he was involved in multiple assignments where he cultivated practical social skills and learned how to multitask effectively. Moreover, working with start-ups and entrepreneurs in his master’s degree projects gave him the chance to balance the competing demands of multiple customers while simultaneously building and maintaining a friendly rapport with them. Sofwat has extensive experience in drafting shareholder agreements, non-disclosure agreements, license agreements, articles of incorporation, corporate by-laws, subscription agreements, and employment agreements. He is also skilled in drafting memorandums and analyzing potential liability relating to early-round financing, the advantages and disadvantages of different business structures, employment law, and intellectual property issues. Once Sofwat completed his Master’s degree, he attended the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law for his Juris Doctor (“JD”) degree. Sofwat sees his legal education as a means to better serve the public administration of justice. He is interested in criminal/quasi-criminal law, and his law school involvement, in particular volunteering with Pro Bono Student Canada’s Queen’s Bench Amicus Project, supports his desire to work in this particular area of law. His experiences working with self-represented litigants, combined with his affinity for constitutional law and diverse educational background, also lend themselves well to the practice areas of criminal and constitutional lawyers.
